The Inaugural Daiwa Ichiban Lecture: Sir Paul Nurse on" Trust in Science"

The inaugural Daiwa Ichiban Lecture was held on Thursday 8th October 2015, in collaboration with the British Embassy in Tokyo, at Ambassador Tim Hitchen’s Residence. Sir Paul Nurse, President of the Royal Society and a Nobel Prize laureate, spoke on the subject of “Trust in Science”. In his lecture, he stressed the enormous benefits that science has delivered to mankind, but argued that trust between scientists and the broader community is vital in maximising both the speed of scientific progress and its value to society.

2015 Joint UK-Japan Workshop on Physics and Applications of Superconductivity (JWPAS 2015)

A joint UK-Japan workshop on the physics and applications of superconductivity was held between 12-15 April 2015 in the picturesque and historic King’s College, Cambridge, UK. The workshop was organised on behalf of the Institute of Physics (IOP) Superconductivity Group, and was funded by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, King’s College, and the IOP, as well as sponsorship from Sumitomo (SHI) Cryogenics and SuperPower. The team from IOP Conferences also provided significant assistance in organising and running the event.

UK-Japan collaboration into dementia care

In May 2014 the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation awarded a Daiwa Foundation Award to Dr Mayumi Hayashi of the Department of Social Science, Health and Medicine at King’s College London to support her collaborative research into dementia care. She has been collaborating with KCL’s Institute of Gerontology and Psychiatry, and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.You can read a newspaper article which she wrote on dementia care in Japan via the red button below:

Actinium at the Sappporo International Art Festival, from 19 July to 3 August 2014

For those in Japan or heading out to the Sapporo International Art Festival this July to September, you are invited to ‘Actinium – Nuclear Culture Exhibition & Forum’, a partnership between Sapporo-based S-AIR and the UK arts organisation The Arts Catalyst. Actinium forms part of the Sapporo International Art Festival Collaborative Programme 2014 and previews on  19 July 2014. The Actinium exhibition will close on 3 August 2014.
