BUTOH WORKSHOP with Kae Ishimoto in Oxford Sunday, 19 April from 1-5pm

This workshop welcomes people from all backgrounds and levels of experience. It will begin with an integrative warm-up, combining methods from floor techniques to breath control, designed to relax the participants’ bodies fully. Kae will then introduce students to Hijikata Tatsumi’s method of butoh* and lead them through a number of Hijikata’s choreographic sequences (butoh-fu), such as ‘pollen’ and ‘nerves’.

Digital Art Collaboration between the University of the West of Scotland and Tokyo Metropolitan University in November 2014

The School of Media, Culture and Society at the University of the West of Scotland has been collaborating with Tokyo Metropolitan University’s IDEEA Lab since 2012. Together with the University of the West of Scotland’s Creative Futures Institute, the aim is to establish a programme of knowledge exchange between the UK and Japan in the field of interactive and multimodal art practice. The project is led by Professor Katarzyna Kosmala of the University of the West of Scotland.

Into the Incandescent: Shokan Matsuda

An exhibition of traditional and innovative maki-e artworks by Shokan Matsuda and some of his followers will be held in the Old College Library at the Chelsea College of Art and Design from 4th-20th July. Matsuda is a renowned Japanese maki-e lacquer artisan who uses both traditional and experimental approaches to apply maki-e to everyday
