The diverse and abundant marine life that coral reefs support creates spectacular scenes that are enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of divers from all over the world. While to most, the word coral will conjure up images of people snorkeling in warm, clear blue waters, coral reefs are also known to exist more than a kilometre beneath the ocean’s surface, in complete darkness where the temperature of the water is just few degrees above freezing. The role that healthy coral plays in supporting marine life, not only in the shallows of the tropics but also in the deep ocean, is seen as one of the key essential variables for scientists to form a better understanding of the marine ecosystem.

The ceramics studio has always been a place where tradition meets experimentation. Spanning 100 years, this exhibition explores the diverse forms, energies and locations that define the modern studio. Ranging from the rise of studio pottery in the 1910s to a number of new commissions by a young generation of UK-based artists, That Continuous Thing – a quote from the American artist Peter Voulkos – traces the changing shape of the ceramics studio over the last century.

Twenty years ago, the pianist, composer and singer-songwriter Jason Kouchak, in association with the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh and the Embassy of Japan in Belfast and with the support of the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, held an evening of piano recitals called Across the Water at the Reid Concert Hall, University of Edinburgh on 31 October 1997 and at the Harty Room, Queen’s University Belfast on 7 November 1997.
