The three shortlisted artists for the Daiwa Foundation Art Prize 2015 are Mikhail Karikis, Oliver Beer and Julie Brook. In June 2015 the shortlisted artists will exhibit at the Daiwa Foundation Japan House Gallery, London. The winning artist, who will be announced during the exhibition’s opening night, will then exhibit at the Aoyama | Meguro Gallery, Tokyo in autumn 2015. For further details please refer click here. The School of Media, Culture and Society at the University of the West of Scotland has been collaborating with Tokyo Metropolitan University’s IDEEA Lab since 2012. Together with the University of the West of Scotland’s Creative Futures Institute, the aim is to establish a programme of knowledge exchange between the UK and Japan in the field of interactive and multimodal art practice. The project is led by Professor Katarzyna Kosmala of the University of the West of Scotland.

The teabowl, or chawan, is at the heart of the Japanese tea ceremony – an object of beauty, simplicity and contemplation. Taking this as its inspiration, this exhibition presents a remarkable variety of teabowls and small vessels, with some 300 pieces by more than 60 makers from all parts of the world. These range from traditional pieces by legendary Japanese and British potters to contemporary vessels – functional and conceptual – by leading European ceramists. On show at Oxford Ceramics Gallery from 24 October to 16 November 2014, the exhibition is complemented by an exciting programme of events at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

Carl will talk about the paintings and drawings in the exhibition as well as about his time spent in Japan, followed by a Q & A session. Former Daiwa Foundation Award recipient, Professor Dan Fern is holding an exhibition at The Coningsby Gallery, 30 Tottenham Street, London until 31 October 2014. The show, entitled Katsura, displays images largely inspired by the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto, Japan.

‘Quietness in noise’ – Opening reception on 23 August, 5-8pm. Presented by Subject Matter in collaboration with SPoN! The show continues until 3 September. Proceeds from the crowd-sourced photographic artwork will go to the Japan Emergency Network (JEN NPO), in order to support those affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
