Project Haiku Prelude – Haiku Kami is dedicated to the victims of the Great Eastern Tohoku Earthquake at 11th March 2011. It consists series of paintings inspired by haiku. The project’s publication, proceeds from which are donated annually to Momo – Kaki Orphans Fund, is chaired by Tadao Ando (www.momokaki.org). It is the first publication of its kind and as such it has received support and encouragement from all the living authors, whose haiku is included in the project as well as institutions and organisations.

Following the success of Dundee Contemporary Art’s (DCA) major exhibition of the work of London-based artist Hiraki Sawa in autumn/winter 2013, Sawa’s work is now being shown in an expanded form at the Tokyo Opera City Gallery until 30 March 2014.

Carl Randall’s ‘Hibakusha Portraits’ (a series of 6 drawings of survivors of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima), are now part of the permanent collection of University College London Museum. The drawings were inspired by John Hersey’s book ‘Hiroshima’, in which the American journalist interviewed 6 survivors just after the atomic bomb was dropped. Carl’s set of 6 portraits are intended as a visual equivalent of Hersey’s documentary account.

The artist talk on 15 October, connected to the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation’s current exhibition Acting Out of Nothingness: from the APT Collection included the Director of the APT Institute, Justin R. Merino, who will describe the work of his organisation and exhibiting artist Kanako Sasaki, who introduced her photography and the thoughts and processes that inform her work. London-based Japanese photographer Tomoko Yoneda whose work addresses similar themes led a discussion on journalism, history and contemporary photography.
