Daiwa Scholarships

1) The flagship Daiwa Scholarships programme was established in 1991. It is a unique 19-month programme of language study, work placement, and homestay in Japan, following a month of Japanese language study in the UK. It only open to UK nationals.
2) The Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese Studies is a postgraduate scholarship programme to support the study of Japanese Studies in either Japan or the UK. Only UK citizens who hold or are completing a degree in Japanese Studies, defined as a course focussing primarily on the study of Japan, and containing a substantial Japanese language component are eligible to apply.

Dr Chris Harding's radio essay on Daimatsu 'The Demon' Hirobumi of 1964 Olympic volleyball fame

In this radio essay, former Daiwa Scholar Dr Chris Harding recalls the first time Tokyo was due to host the Olympic Games in 1940 and talks about Daimatsu ‘The Demon’ Hirobumi – the zealous coach who achieved a gold medal for Japan’s women’s volleyball team in the 1964 Olympics. Carl Randall exhibiting new painting at ING Discerning Eye Exhibition: on until 31 Dec 2020

Daiwa Scholarship alumnus and artist Carl Randall has been selected for this year’s ING Discerning Eye Exhibition, with a new painting ‘On the Horizon (After Lucas & Kuruganti)’. The event, sponsored by ING bank, is usually held at The Mall Galleries in London, but this year due to coronavirus is held exclusively online. The exhibition runs until 31 December 2020, and all works are for sale.
