Daiwa Scholars 2019 depart for Tokyo

This year’s eight Daiwa Scholars have departed for Japan, embarking on their 19-month programme of language study, homestay, and work placements. Fresh from a month of Japanese tuition in the UK, the Scholars will hone their language skills at Waseda university in Tokyo over the course of the next year. The Scholarship will allow them to further their studies and specialties, which range from the fine arts to science and humanities, and forge new and enduring links between the UK and Japan.

Emily - an English Language Noh play; 4-6 September 2019

“Emily” will be performed at Tara Arts Theatre (Earlsfield, London): 4 to 6 September. For three nights only, professional Noh actors and musicians from Japan will offer a cross-cultural take on one of the most significant events in women’s political history. In 1913, Emily Wilding Davison ran onto the racetrack at the Epsom Derby in support of votes for women. She was struck down by the King’s horse and died four days later. But what happened to the jockey that killed her?

THE鍵KEY makes its London debut at two festivals in June and August 2019

THEKEY: Daiwa Scholarship alumna, Francesca Le Lohé’s site-specific, dramatic musical work, inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki’s novelThe Key (1956) featured in Powell Tuck Associates’ event on 27 June 2019 as part of the London Festival of Architecture, and made its UK debut as part of the Tête à Tête Opera Festival in August 2019.

THE鍵KEY received its world premiere to great acclaim at Nakacho House, Tokyo in May 2018, supported by The Mutomai Fund and Kickstarter Donators and went on to have a longer run of performances at Hirakushi Denchu House and Atelier, 19 to 26 May 2019, supported by Arts Council Tokyo and the Japan Arts Council.
