After 12 years as Director General of the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, I shall be leaving at the end of this month. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to direct the wide range of activities that the Foundation pursues in support of UK-Japan relations.

Applications have now closed for the Daiwa Foundation Tohoku Scholarships.
In response to the 11 March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in the north east of Japan, the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, in partnership with the British Council in Japan, launched a £250,000 scholarship fund to support Japanese students in the Tohoku region.

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation is delighted to be supporting the world premiere of TeZukA at Sadler’s Wells, 6-10 September 2011 as well as associated workshops and talks. The production was conceived and choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells.

The WEA (Workers’ Educational Association) for Adult Learning will be operating a course with the support of the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation. This course will help to develop an understanding of the Japanese artistic and cultural approach, providing knowledge about key aesthetics and other essential issues relating to Japanese art and culture.

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation was delighted to support this day of Japan-related events conceived by Jah Wobble and his team. Donations for free workshops were sent to the relief fund for Japanese communities who have been affected in the recent natural and environmental disasters. Most of the workshops were free to attend though Joji Hirota’s drumming performance and Jah Wobble and his Japanese Dub Orchestra were ticketed events. Professor Marie Conte-Helm, Director General of the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation since 2000, has been awarded an OBE for services to UK-Japan educational and cultural relations in the June 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The call for entries for the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation’s second Art Prize is now open with applications closing on Monday 26 September 2011. The Daiwa Foundation Art Prize is an open submission Prize which will offer a British artist a first solo exhibition in Japan.

The Print Sale for Japan took place on Thursday, 14 April 2011, immediately following Roland Kelt’s 4pm lecture, Pop Culture from a Multipolar Japan. The artists of East London Printmakers, an independent artist-run printmaking studio, work in techniques such as hand made stencils, silkscreen, fabric printing, woodcut, etching and photographic processes.
