A large painting made by former Daiwa Scholar, Carl Randall in Japan, Tokyo Portrait, is being exhibited at Art Volta 10, Basel, Switzerland, 16 to 21 June. Art Volta runs alongside Art Basel, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious art fairs.

Carl Randall’s ‘Hibakusha Portraits’ (a series of 6 drawings of survivors of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima), are now part of the permanent collection of University College London Museum. The drawings were inspired by John Hersey’s book ‘Hiroshima’, in which the American journalist interviewed 6 survivors just after the atomic bomb was dropped. Carl’s set of 6 portraits are intended as a visual equivalent of Hersey’s documentary account.

Former Daiwa Scholar, BP Travel Award 2012 winner and MEXT alumnus Carl Randall’s latest solo exhibition is now on display at Daiwa Foundation Japan House. Tokyo Portraits is a series of figurative paintings inspired by the people and places of Tokyo – responses to everyday life in Japan’s capital, as seen through the eyes of a visiting UK artist.

As 2012 BP Travel Award winner, former Daiwa Scholar Carl Randall trekked along Japan’s Tokaido Highway in the footsteps of woodblock artist Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858), recording the people he met en route. The National Portrait Gallery is running a competition in connection with Carl’s current exhibition, In the footsteps of Hiroshige: Portraits of Modern Japan.

The work of former Daiwa Scholar Dr Carl Randall, winner of the 2012 BP Travel Award, will also be included in this year’s BP Portrait Award exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, in an exhibition titled In the footsteps of Hiroshige: Portraits of Modern Japan. The exhibition will run from 20 June until 15 September 2013.
