To the Japanese Embassy last night for a reception with the Emperor and Empress. There were a lot of rules and regulations for those attending, but this seemed understandable enough. Photographs were also forbidden, so I don’t have any. Standing with the Empress in front of a gold screen, the Emperor gave a short speech in slow, but extremely clear, English, thanking the people of the UK for their support after the Japanese earthquake last March.

It was a cold, wet and miserable day in London yesterday, and with storms threatening I have to say I wasn’t overly keen to spend my evening in a crypt. Fortunately, the artists and designers who are a part of LOOCHOO ‘Time’ which was opening at The Crypt Gallery in London brought all of the warmth of Okinawa with them, along with music, dancing and live painting.

Direct from Japan to attend Mr Punch’s 350th birthday celebrations, two masters of kugutsu – Shiro Ito and Eimei Katami – will be appearing at the Little Angel Theatre in London on Thursday, 10 May, to present an evening of puppetry, including a Japanese-style Punch and Judy show.

19 recipients have been selected for Daiwa Foundation Tohoku Scholarships, with awards so far totalling £133,000. The Daiwa Foundation established its Tohoku Scholarships in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, in collaboration with British Council Japan, for students from the Tohoku region of Japan wishing to study in the UK.
